We would always advise that you have your chimney or flue swept before any installation of a fire or Woodburner. If you are changing from a solid fuel fire to a gas fire, it is in fact a legal requirement that you have your chimney swept. In particular, if there is no cowl fitted to the top of the chimney stack or flue, it must be checked for blockages.
Yes you can, and there are various options open to you. If the fireplace is going against an outside wall, you could have a balanced flue or powerflue gas fire which expels fumes horizontally outside. Alternatively, you could opt for a flueless gas fire, which has a catalytic converter and is 100% efficient. Finally, don’t dismiss electric fires with ultra-realistic flame effects and super simple installation.
